International Women’s Day 2022 | Krystal Solorzano
Next up in our International Women’s Day series, we have Vice President, and Associate Principal of Marketing & Business Development, Krystal Solorzano.
Why do you think it is important to celebrate International Women’s Day?
It’s a day of action and acknowledgment that, while we’ve made huge strides, we, regardless of gender, still have a lot of work to do in the pursuit of equality. It’s a time to honor and express gratitude for those before us that fought so hard to get us to where we are and for those committing themselves to the continued change required. International Women’s Day is about recognizing the work that still needs to be done around the world to create a global community that respects and values people regardless of sex.
Have you faced any barriers in your career due to being a woman? If so, how did you overcome them?
I consider myself lucky to have had several mentors throughout my career, both male and female, that have encouraged and pushed me to chase my goals with unapologetic force. There have certainly been barriers, but I’ve had the support to navigate and cross them with strength and grace.
What do you think is the biggest issue today facing women of your age?
Balance. It feels like we must be giving 110%, if not more, in every aspect of what we do and there’s little room for error. It’s a lot to take on and takes a lot of organization and composure. Sometimes, it feels as if there is little time left over for personal reflection, but it’s so important to find balance and moments of downtime.
Why do we need more women in leadership?
Women bring a different perspective and balance to leadership and one that’s greatly needed for a company to grow and, ultimately, excel.
What’s the biggest learning experience you’ve had?
Don’t shy away from the unknown. Take every opportunity to challenge yourself, because it’s within those challenges that you will discover what you’re really capable of.
What’s your favorite/most rewarding part of your work?
The people, the talent, and the visionary experiences that are created. I feel privileged to work with such an incredible team. I love seeing projects go from the drafting table to welcoming guests. It’s amazing to see the process and witness the passion and drive of the team from start to finish.
Can you share a moment that’s inspired you?
Every day, my daughter inspires me to be better, to work harder, and relish each moment. She sees the world in such a different light, with so much innocence and joy. I hope I can be a small part of the change still needed to shape the world into a place deserving of the next generation.
If you could have dinner with three inspirational women, dead or alive, who would they be and why?
I want to go to dinner alone and enjoy a quiet meal.
