Capitalizing upon panoramic views of San Francisco’s downtown, SB Architects brought Bernal Height’s Residence to life.
The compact, but visually expansive infill, presented a unique opportunity to create a new, free-standing home, while preserving the site’s existing structure as a separate residential unit.

THE DESIGN
DEFYING HORIZONTAL RESTRAINTS
The micro-features of the site inspired the design concept, as did the ambition to create a contemporary design statement anchored in Northern California architectural and sustainability ideals.
Its corner location and internal layout resulted in an exterior expression that defies horizontal restraints, creating a blend of horizontal and vertical lines punctuated by a strong cantilevered roof.
THE INTERIORS
FLOW-THROUGH DESIGN
The home’s naturally sloping site inspired the idea of a focal stair core topped by a dramatic skylight, bathing the interiors in natural light while forming a direct link between private spaces on the entry-level and public spaces on the upper level.
